Westfield North Lakes has expanded their retail precinct to include an alfresco dining area and cinema complex. To complement these spaces a catenary lighting system was tensioned between various structures within the area. Over 500 metres of stainless steel cables spanning up to eighteen metres across form an abstract grid, providing suspension points to suit dozens of luminaires. This illumination factor encourages activation of the laneway at night by helping facilitate evening entertainment.
A series of vertical trellises were located in the planter beds below to give the installation a dual purpose as both a canopy trellis providing shade and shelter to visitors by day and by night providing an ambient lighting element. This unique install involved the consideration of load requirements to both the trellis element and catenary which included electrical components. All custom brackets were engineered to accommodate loads and designed to seamlessly integrate with the various façade materials.
The installation involved careful coordination between trades to integrate the catenary bracket and cable arrangement into the various facades. Full access was maintained to all site areas while also abiding by stringent Scentre Group safety requirements. The trellis greening and catenary lighting elements come together to transform the zone into a space for all to enjoy.
